What made you decide to pursue a career in music?
My grandfather. He was a professional violinist and carpenter.

What has been the highlight of your career thus far?
The highlight of my career? That’s difficult to answer – the most rewarding times have been when I have touched people with my playing. After a performance of Pange Lingua, a lady came up to me in tears as it had been her late husband’s favorite song. It’s moments like that that keep me coming back, and help being inspiration to my art.

What made you choose to play oboe?
I wanted a challenge!

What’s the most challenging thing about playing oboe?
You have to learn how to play, but also how to make reeds! I love the variety!

Do you have a favorite piece of orchestral repertoire to play and/or listen to?
Mahler 6 or Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite

When you’re not performing, what do you do for fun?
Hike. Spend time with my loves.

What’s one thing you hope people take away from a DSSO concert?
Joy.

Do you have any advice for those looking to pursue a career in music?
You have to want it, and be willing to work for it. Keep reinventing yourself.
