Youth Orchestra

*** COVID PROGRAM IMPACT ***

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the DSSYO program will be held virtually beginning in September through December 2020. We will re-evaluate the status at that time and determine whether to continue in this manner or to begin to do some form of hybrid virtual/in-person rehearsals. The virtual program will offer regular sessions with conductors and coaches, working toward building our sense of community and improving musicianship with performance goals. Please be assured that the health and safety of all DSSYO members and staff are of paramount importance, and all decisions will be made in that context. Program details, including updated tuition rates, will be sent out in August to members accepted into the program.

Join us for our 80th Anniversary Season!

Membership is open to students ages 10 through high school. Be part of the finest musicians from the region–find out more by emailing youthorchestras@dsso.com.

2020 Auditions

The DSSYO wants you! Auditions are being accepted in online format for the 20-21 season. The deadline to submit an application and audition video is July 6, 2020. After July 6, applications and auditions will be accepted according to need.

Should I audition?
If you are between the ages of 10 and 18 and enjoy performing quality music at a high level with others, we highly encourage you to audition! We hope that Youth Orchestras will not only be fun, but help you become the best musician you can. The Sinfonia program is open to all string players, no audition needed.

The Orchestras

The entry-level string orchestra program where string players develop vital ensemble skills. Sinfonia students generally have 2-4 years of experience on their instruments. Members experience regular group lessons by instrument and level with a focus on ensemble skill-building. There is no audition required to participate in this program. Click here for some practice tips from DSSO musicians!

An auditioned, full orchestra with members with maturing skills on their instruments. String players will have 3-6 years on their instruments. Winds, brass, and percussion players will have 1-4 years of experience. This group presents three concerts each season. Students play original and arranged symphonic repertoire from classical and pops genres.

The most advanced full orchestra offered by the DSSYO program. This auditioned group performs three concerts, plus aside-by-side experience with the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra. Students play full, unabridged symphonic repertoire.

A component of the overall DSSYO program, where students split rehearsal time between the orchestras and PE. This auditioned ensemble explores diverse realms of music influenced by classical, jazz, and popular music.
