DULUTH, Minnesota – The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra is excited to kick off their 2019-2020 season on October 5! Concerts this season will leave the audience feeling powerful, inspired, and transformed.

What: Lynn Harrell Plays Dvořák’s Cello Concerto Masterworks I
When: Saturday, October 5, 2019 – 7 pm
Where: Symphony Hall at the DECC

Music Director Dirk Meyer and the DSSO are thrilled to be starting the season on October 5 with soloist Lynn Harrell. Harrell will take the stage with the orchestra for Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, an incredibly moving and romantic piece that has stood the test of time. Harrell last performed with the DSSO in 1984 under former conductor, Taavo Virkhaus.
Another highlight to this concert is a modern orchestral work written in 2010. Starburst by American composer Jonathan Leshnoff, is a short work, timing out at a total of eight minutes. But do not let that fool you, it is gripping and suspenseful and jam-packed with energy and momentum. Leshnoff has been celebrated for his music’s complexity, and has been ranked among the most performed living composer by American orchestras.
The Orchestra will also perform Tchaikovsky’s tribute to the tragic journey of Francesca da Rimini from Dante’s famous “Inferno.” Tchaikovsky brings to life the turbulence from Dante’s descriptions of hell. The journey of Francesca and Paolo that Tchaikovsky presents can sometimes seem so real that some may experience a sensation of disorientation during performances.
This concert is wonderful combination of modern and classical, and is sure to leave the audience feeling powerful, transformed, and inspired.
