Youth Orchestra Audition Excerpts 2016-2017: Instructions for Auditionees

The DSSO Youth Orchestras will hold Fall auditions on September 8, September 21 and September 22.

Auditions are held at The College of St. Scholastica

To schedule an audition or ask any questions, please email Kevin Hoeschen, Youth Symphony conductor, at youthorchestras@dsso.com.  More detailed instructions are available on our Youth Orchestra audition brochure, which you can download from this page.

Please fill out this form prior to your audition.

If you are new to the DSSYO program and auditioning for the first time this Fall, please prepare a 2 minute solo for your instrument that shows your playing ability. You may choose one of the following excerpts for your instrument if you would like, but it is not required. You will also be asked to sight read a short excerpt.

If you are a returning DSSYO member and/or re-auditioning for the fall, please download and print the appropriate PDF file(s) accessed via the links under your instrument which are available below.  Prepare the excerpt with help from your teacher and by listening to performances on YouTube or another source.

In addition to these excerpts, please prepare a short (1-2 minute) solo that demonstrates your playing ability.  Please bring two copies of your solo for the audition committee.  (Photocopies are acceptable.)  You may also be asked to play a few measures of sight-reading.

The Sinfonia excerpts are from the Suite for Strings by Henry Purcell (arr. by Barbirolli). The music can be heard at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGz0FjF6JLI

The Concert Orchestra excerpts (except for Bass Clarinet) are selected from the piece Hativah-The Hope which can be heard at http://www.jwpepper.com/sheet-music/media-player.jsp?&type=audio&productID=2466282. In your preparation please listen to the recording for tempo and style.

The Youth Symphony excerpts are from Marche Slave by Tchaikovsky.  The music can be heard at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwqdOhF6LhE
