INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING AND TAKING THE AUDITION

  1. Excerpts: New applicants and returning DSSYO members, please download and print the appropriate PDF file(s) accessed via the links below under your instrument. Hard copies of these excerpts are available on request from the DSSO office. Prepare the excerpt with help from your teacher and by listening to performances on YouTube or another source.
  2. Solo: In addition to these excerpts, please prepare a short (1-2 minute) solo that demonstrates your playing ability.   You may also be asked to play a few measures of sight-reading.Please bring two copies of your solo for the audition committee.  (Photocopies are acceptable.) 
  3. Membership application form: Please fill out this membership application form prior to your audition and bring it with you, also.
  4. Listening: Links to the audition pieces are available below. This will help in your preparation.

The Sinfonia (the all strings ensemble)  excerpts are selected from “Variations on a Well-Known Sea Chantey” arranged by Richard Stephan. The music can be heard here.

The Concert Orchestra (the intermediate orchestra that includes woodwinds and brass) excerpts (except for Bass Clarinet) are selected from the piece Marche Hongroise from Damnation of Faust by Hector Berlioz (arr. by Bruno Reibold). The original version of this piece  can be heard here. In your preparation please listen to the recording for tempo and style. The excerpts are in cut time – Goal tempo: half note equals 80.

The Youth Symphony (the advanced orchestra that includes woodwinds and brass) excerpts are from Symphony No. 9 (From the New World) by Antonin Dvorak.  The music can be heard here.

Percussion – Xylophone or Marimba / Snare Drum / Timpani:

Players interested in auditioning for the Percussion Ensemble (which includes membership in both the Concert Orchestra and/or Youth Symphony) should prepare excerpt 34 (for xylophone or marimba) and excerpt 35 for snare drum and timpani. You do not need to prepare an additional solo. Please bring mallets.
